While Mount Taranaki is a highlight of the park, it's important to note that the summit track is recommended only for experienced hikers and is not advised during the snowy months from May to December. An excellent alternative is the Pouakai Tarns track.
Pouakai Tarns is a scenic trek that winds through native bushland, passing by picturesque waterfalls before reaching the alpine tarns. Once you've made it to the top, you'll be treated to breathtaking panoramic views of Mount Taranaki.
The hike is intermediate, covering about 12.5km round trip. Starting from the Mangorei Track trailhead in Egmont National Park, expect the journey to take around 3 hours. Keep in mind that the highlight of the hike is the incredible view from the Pouakai Tarns viewpoint, so be sure to check the weather conditions before you head out. Optimal conditions include calm, sunny weather with minimal cloud cover for the best views.
