Activities in New Plymouth

New Plymouth is brimming with exciting activities and sights to explore. To help you make the most of your visit, we've put together a list of our top recommendations for things to do in the area.

Waitara Kayaking:

If you're up for some excitement, you've got to try white water kayaking on the Waitara River with a Canoe & Kayak tour

This thrilling adventure lasts about three and a half hours and takes you through the beautiful West Coast rivers. It's suitable for kids aged 6 and up, as long as they're with an adult, and safety demos make sure everyone stays safe and has a blast.

You can choose to meet up at the river or get picked up and dropped off in town. Tours set off at 9 am or 1 pm. And don't forget to pack some warm layers for after, along with water, sunscreen, and a sunhat to stay protected from the sun!

Puke Ariki Museum:

Take some time to explore the rich history of New Plymouth at the Puke Ariki Museum. Conveniently located in the heart of the city, this family-friendly spot offers free admission to all visitors.

Discover fascinating exhibitions, artifacts, and interactive displays that vividly depict the stories of the local Māori and European settlers. Ideal for a rainy day or a cultural outing, the museum welcomes visitors from 10 am to 5 pm, offering an enriching experience for everyone.

Sugar Loaf Island:

Book a wildlife cruise from Chaddy’s Charters, where you'll have the ultimate experience of witnessing the thriving seal colony on Sugar Loaf Island.

Led by an experienced skipper, this hour-long tour offers more than just spectacular views. You'll also get fascinating insights into the region's history and marine life.

For just $45 NZD, hop aboard a classic wooden rescue boat from 1953 and soak in the breathtaking views of the sea and New Plymouth from the water.

And if you're into fishing, you're in luck—Chaddy’s Charters also offers fishing charters where you can try your hand at catching fish or pulling up a cray pot. It's a great way to add some excitement to your day on the water!

Cape Egmont Lighthouse:

The Cape Egmont Lighthouse is an iconic landmark that’s well worth a visit. It’s the perfect outing for families, located a quick 40-minute drive away from New Plymouth.

While you can’t enter the lighthouse itself, you’ll still gain fascinating insights into New Plymouth's history by strolling around its perimeter, the walkway is open from 9 am to 5 pm. Perched on top of the cliffs, the lighthouse serves as a visible marker for the westernmost point of the Taranaki coastline.

From almost any angle, you can enjoy the magnificent scenery with fantastic photo opportunities! Whether you snap your shot facing inland, capturing Mount Taranaki in the background, or taking in the ocean views of nearby beaches and the countryside, there’s plenty to see. For the most breathtaking views, we recommend visiting this historical landmark at sunset.

Lake Mangamahoe:

Spend a delightful day at Lake Mangamahoe, a popular destination for walking, mountain biking, and running that offers multiple lookout points to the iconic Mount Taranaki.

Enjoy a scenic circuit walk suitable for all ages and abilities, although some offshoots may have steep sections. The biking tracks are conveniently separate from the walking paths, ensuring a safe and enjoyable experience for all.

We recommend bringing along a delicious picnic to enjoy at one of the viewpoints so you can take in your beautiful surroundings during your visit.

While entry to the lake is free, it's important to note that the gate opens at sunrise and closes after sunset so don’t leave it too late in the day to visit this spot.

Pouakai Tarns:

No visit to New Plymouth is complete without a trip to Egmont National Park! While Mount Taranaki is a highlight of the park, it's important to note that the summit track is recommended only for experienced hikers and is not advised during the snowy months from May to December. An excellent alternative is the Pouakai Tarns track.

Pouakai Tarns is a scenic trek that winds through native bushland, passing by picturesque waterfalls before reaching the alpine tarns. Once you've made it to the top, you'll be treated to breathtaking panoramic views of Mount Taranaki.

The hike is intermediate, covering about 12.5km round trip. Starting from the Mangorei Track trailhead in Egmont National Park, expect the journey to take around 3 hours. Keep in mind that the highlight of the hike is the incredible view from the Pouakai Tarns viewpoint, so be sure to check the weather conditions before you head out. Optimal conditions include calm, sunny weather with minimal cloud cover for the best views.

For an easier walk suitable for all abilities, try the Veronica Loop Track. It’s a lovely walk through changing alpine rainforest, with the option to take a detour to a lookout point for amazing views of Mount Taranaki and the coast. Covering a 3km uphill loop, expect to spend around 1.5 to 2 hours to complete the hike.

Don't forget to bring your camera along to capture the magnificent scenery and snap some awesome photos!
