To get there, take State Highway 1 north out of Whangārei, then turn right onto Puna Rere Drive then another right onto Ngunguru Road at Tikipunga. Follow this winding coastal road for around 25km, passing through Ngunguru and continuing onto Matapouri Road. After another 10km, you’ll arrive at Matapouri Bay, where parking is available near the beachfront. From there, it’s a short walk to the beach.

Maitai Bay, Northland

Maitai Bay, located on the Karikari Peninsula, relatively far north, is a stunning beach with calm, clear waters and golden sand. Its secluded nature makes it one of Northland’s hidden treasures, offering a peaceful spot away from crowded tourist hotspots. The bay is divided into two sections, Waikato Bay and Maitai Bay, both of which are ideal for swimming, snorkelling, and paddleboarding. Maitai Bay is located northeast of Kaitaia, approximately 45km away. If you are travelling up from Kaitai head north on State Highway 1 until you reach Awanui, then take the right onto State Highway 10. After approximately 15km, just before Lake Ohia, take the left onto Inland Road, continuing along for another 15km up to Maitai Bay/Waikato Bay Carpark. There’s a DOC campsite nearby, allowing visitors to stay overnight for easy beach access, making it a great spot for either a multiple-day trip or an afternoon visit.

Oke Bay, Bay of Islands

Tucked away near Russell in the Bay of Islands, Oke Bay is an idyllic destination for travellers looking for a peaceful beach escape. Its white sandy shore and clear turquoise waters create a picture-perfect setting that is relatively quiet, even during peak travel seasons. Oke Bay is located near Rawhiti, approximately 25km southeast of Russell. To get there from Russell, take Russell-Whakapara Road out of town, then turn left onto Waikare Road. Follow this winding coastal route for about 14km before turning right onto Rawhiti Road. From here, park near the Oke Bay Track entrance and take a short scenic walk down to the beach.

West Coast North Island Beaches

The west coast of the North Island contrasts with the serene northern shores, offering dramatic landscapes and wild surf. This winding road leads directly to Piha, offering stunning views before arriving at the beach. Parking is available near the beachfront, with easy access to walking tracks, surf spots, and scenic lookouts.

The road winds through rolling countryside before arriving at the main car park near the beach.
