8 Unmissable Ski Slopes

Friday, August 14, 2020

With dozens of ski slopes across the country, you’re spoilt for choice this snow season, so we put together a list of our favourites to help you choose.

We recommend checking out the Ski conditions, and a 10-day forecast using Snow HQ.

Turoa (Mount Ruapehu)

The North Island’s only ski area, Mount Ruapehu, is home to a number of slopes, the most popular of which - Turoa, is the perfect place for beginners and families to spend some time in the snow. Catering to all your needs, skiing, snowboarding, and sledding, this is an essential stop if you’re not heading down to the South Island this winter.

When planning your trip, don't forget to organise your gear hire and grab your lift passes!

Mount Hutt Ski Area

About an hour and a half drive from Christchurch, this should be your first stop when you land in the Garden City. With a beautiful resort and fully accessible slopes for all levels of skiers, this is a great place for first-timers and families.

For the best deals, check out the Mt Hutt Shop for gear hire and lift passes before you go.

Mount Lyford

This all-levels ski field is located just West of the coastal town of Kaikoura. With beautiful mountainside accommodation close enough to walk to the slopes, you’ll be swept up in the views day and night. These are probably the quietest and most relaxed slopes on offer, so if you’d rather no one see when you fall flat on your face, this is your best option.

Hanmer Springs

One of the more quiet mountains, not far from Mt. Lyford, this field offers some great accommodation packages to go with their ski passes, as well as offering full gear hire and a one-hour beginner's lesson for a very reasonable price. They also offer ski lessons outside of this, so if you want to upskill or just need a refresher, it’s a great way to get acquainted with the snow.

Once you’re done on the slopes, check out the Hanmer Springs hot pools that we talked about in our Hot Pools Blog.

Roundhill Ski Area

Roundhill is a family-owned ski area perfect for skiing and snowboarding of all levels, their beginner area is perfect for those who aren’t quite confident enough to tackle the big slopes just yet. Just a quick drive from Roundhill is Tekapo, a lakeside town that is a perfect place to stay if you’re planning on spending a few days hitting the slopes.

Be sure to check out gear hire and lift passes before you go, to make sure you get the best deals.

Coronet Peak

Coronet Peak, deep in the heart of the South Island is a popular destination for both locals and international visitors year-round. With some exceptional walking and hiking in the surrounding areas, there’s much more to do than just skiing. Not to mention it’s close to one of our most sparkling hidden gems, Arrowtown, which stuns no matter the season. Coronet is famous for also offering a Night Ski, where you can tackle the slopes at twilight.

They have several options for lift passes and packages available.

Treble Cone Ski Area

Treble Cone is well known for their advanced slopes, as well as smaller easier spots for the beginners out there. The real draw of the Treble Cone though is the views. Stunning panoramic shots offer you a look at some of the views made famous by featuring in the Lord of the Rings and the Hobbit films.
