Have some time to fill in at Auckland Airport? Don’t stick around the terminal, we've compiled our Top 5 list of things to keep you occupied. Whether you're waiting 3-4 hours for your next flight or are staying slightly longer, there's something to please everyone. Food, adventure, shopping, something for the kids...we've got it covered.
1. Villa Maria Vineyard
We can’t think of a better way to spend a day after a long (or short) flight, than at the Villa Maria Winery. As New Zealand’s most awarded winery for over 30 years, eating and drinking at Villa Maria is a must do, and is only a five minute drive from Auckland International Airport.
Take a tour of the winery and learn about its unique history and wine making process. Alternatively, have an extended lunch at the Vineyard Café….or do both! An extensive wine list with all of Villa Maria’s wines you know and love, combined with a fabulous lunch menu (think Seared Scallops, Shredded Duck Risotto and Crispy Skin Salmon), creates an enjoyable, low-key day out you won’t want to miss.
2. Butterfly Creek
Staying in the Auckland Airport region and need to entertain the kids? In spite of its name, Butterfly Creek offers a plethora of fun and exciting attractions, for the young and the young at heart.
Experience Dinosaur Kingdom, a prehistoric themed attraction that features more than 30 dinosaurs, fossils and skeletons; visit “Scar” and “Gouldie”, Butterfly Creeks resident crocodiles and enjoy a live crocodile show at 1pm every day; immerse yourself among living butterfly’s in one of New Zealand’s largest tropical butterfly houses and walk through the aquarium, Buttermilk Farm and reptile and monkey enclosures.
Leave approximately 2-3 hours, and finish with morning tea, lunch or afternoon tea at Butterfly Creeks café and eatery.
3. Adventure Island Mini Golf
What would a Top 5 list be without Mini-Golf? It’s designed to appeal to people of all ages and abilities, boosts your vitamin D intake and is a healthy way to waste two to three hours (expensive cinema outings be gone).
If you have a short layover in Auckland, Adventure Island Mini-Golf is perfect, at approximately a two-minute drive from Auckland Airport. Combine Butterfly Creek and mini-golf if you’re looking to kill an entire day.
4. Onehunga Dress-Smart
Okay, so Dress-Smart is not technically in the Auckland Airport area but it is only a short 15 to 20 minute drive away! And being New Zealand’s largest shopping outlet store, it’s definitely worth hiring a rental car or taking the bus to get there.
The 100+ stores boast fashion luxury brands such as Mi Piaci, Oroton and Working Style as well as your main street, local favourites such as Jeans West, Max, Esprit, Dotti, Nike and Rodd & Gunn. You will also find a good selection of cosmetics, books, perfume, stationery and mobile phone stores, with everything heavily discounted.
P.S. on a Thursday night from 5pm, the underground carpark turns into a night market. Spend the afternoon browsing the shops and stay for dinner at the night markets’ 75+ enticing and inexpensive food stalls.
5. Rocket Ropes
Like an obstacle course…but not on the ground; rocket Ropes features over 50 fun activities at heights of 3, 6 and 9 meters high. With two courses, as well as a 120m flying fox, giant swing and a “big leap”, it caters to all family members. Have an entire day?
